These leaves are picked when they are halfway through growing and maturing, after the vein down the middle of the leaves has shifted from white but before it turns to a reddish color. The vein color is an outward sign that indicates the maturity of the leaves and the alkaloid profile within. The profile within the kratom leaves is made of over 20 alkaloids, but the primary two pieces which give kratom its popularity are mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine.
When the leaves have reached this exact stage in growth, they are picked by hand and washed with fresh water to remove any dirt or debris. The leaves are then taken indoors where they are hung to dry on drying racks.
